Letters from the Front Row

Figuring it all out is the best part of your journey

if you are figuring it out as you go you are probably doing it right.

The Mercer Editorial Team Nov 17, 2025

Every article is being written with an album in mind, which is playing at the same time we are writing what you are reading right now, so for full experience we highly recommend going to your music provider and play Blonde by Frank Ocean as you are reading this, promise its worth it. Ok back to the topic now!

Nobody ever figure it all out.

Our substack journey is the clearest example if you look at it.
we are five articles in, this is just the beginning, we still figure it out as we go.
no one figures out anything meaningful in five attempts right? imagine Kanye stopping after 5 beats, Brady stopping after 5 throws, damn, Basquiat stopping after 5 paintings? the list is long, everyone has been there, everyone learned from it, everyone persisted, because what connects all these people together? the realization that maybe there is beauty in figuring it all out.

expanding on the substack, our latest post highlighting key words from the substack crossed 600K views, we still dont know SHIT. we still learn how to use the chat, how to insert audio, hell, how to write and be concise. the cadence, the font, the website design, there are so many variables and NONE of them are mastered, which is exactly why this phase matters. the lack of clarity is the proof we are in the process, and not past it.

also on top of that, nobody ever really figures it all out, so calm down, its all good, you are exactly where you are supposed to be, go spin some records and create, for the love of it.

Those who are rushing the process.

They lose the fun of it.

Always wondering “oh what should be the next hit?”. Trying to rush the process will only leave you behind because there is progress for everything, progress is part of life.

How enjoyable would it be to ride a bike in Central Park if you never fell in the street when your parents first taught you how to ride? All bruised up? You see, it was all part of the process.

Those who skip those steps would find themselves, at some point of their career, in a miss-out state (no pun-intended).
You mean to tell us LeBron isnt feeling bad sometimes for never having that college experience? That NCAA championship that Melo got with Syracuse, no amount of money could buy that for Bron (feeling bad, second time we are putting the Lakers on blast lol, whatever, Knicks here, face it, bing bong!)

Its like designing a collection before even picking up a sewing machine, skipping that unique moment, of when you first stitched the neck label. As crooked and incomplete as it is - there is a sense of success, of progress, we mean, it’s still holding on to the garment right?

The garment is your world, and all you have to do is make sure you are holding on to it, the perfection doesnt matter at any point

Virgil!

Btw, a quick Google Search showed that It took Leonardo da Vinci approximately 16 years to complete The Mona Lisa. that’s 5840 Days.

lets say he worked 12 Hours a day? no sick days, What is even PTO at those times? 12*5840 is 70080 hours. feeling good now? lol it gets better, get with us.

Have you ever stopped to look at where you are now compared to where you were a year ago, or even a month ago?

Noise.

It’s so easy to get caught up in the noise, and not having that moment to even look at how far you got in your progress.
We started this thing about a year ago plus-minus, and we kept the first posts up, because this is progress, what we do now visually is 180 degrees different than how it was when we just started, and to be honest, couldn’t picture this being like this.

But it wasnt always like that, even now its not clear, guaranteed the layouts will be changed a million times, but does every time we change it mean that we did something wrong the whole time? No. It means that we had the base version, something to start, something to hold on to (remember that garment metaphor earlier? exactly) and that led to what you see now.

Compare any designers first design to their “peak” (if you believe in peak) one totally different right? but why we never ask what lays in between those two moments? People tend to forget about that timeframe in between low and high, bottom and top, but why? This is the best time of your career.

You probably think oh wow another music reference? Yes, we don’t know who reads, and what connects so it might work, and change a few lives in between :)

Another analogy is Jay Z. Compare Reasonable Doubt to 4:44?
Totally different right? But what happened in between? We had The Blueprint, we had Hard Knock Life, Magna Carta, Watch the Throne. Those albums are the artery that connects that Marcy Projects Shawn Carter to that Tribeca Jay-Z.

It’s time we enjoy that progress, and not shove it to the side.

See you in 48 Hours…
