Pray For Paris Is A Renaissance Painting Disguised As A Rap Album

Pray For Paris is a Renaissance painting disguised as a rap album - and six years later, it still hasn't been touched.

Normally we would try to justify our take, but if we have to explain why this album is a masterpiece that sonically and artistically stands at the level of some Renaissance works, we would already lose the meaning here - because at this point, it is universally known. Some things simply arrive fully formed, carrying a weight that doesn't need to be argued for. Pray For Paris is one of them. The kind of album that doesn't ask you to meet it halfway, because it has already done the work. To dissect it too much would be to miss the point entirely. You either feel it or you don't, and those who do know exactly why it belongs in the same breath as the greats.

January 2026, Paris Fashion Week. In between shows, events and coverage, had a few hours to spend, so headed straight to the Louvre - and the first thing post check in? Before the escalators, before the stairs? Pray For Paris, full volume, out of body experience. And a reminder here: not many albums can be played with zero skips when you are standing inside one of the greatest museums in the world. Most records shrink in that company. This one didn't; if anything, the Louvre felt like the right room for it.

The production alone is guaranteed to leave you speechless - especially when you're standing in front of a Caravaggio and it all clicks into place (Mona who?) And for the art fans here: yes, Caravaggio was Baroque, we know it, but don't forget the album opens with the auction of Salvator Mundi. Renaissance. The artwork was co-designed with Virgil, who also streamed the album with Westside Gunn on Twitch ahead of its 2020 release, truly ahead of its time.

Conway, Benny, Joey, Tyler, Wale, Joyce Wrice, Billie Essco, Freddie Gibbs, Roc Marciano, Boldly, Keisha Plum and Cartier William; and that's before you even get to the production. Camouflage Monk, ALC, Preemo, Daringer, Beat Butcha, DJ Muggs. Every name on this record pulls its weight, and the result is something that doesn't feel assembled so much as inevitable. An album you keep coming back to, every. Single. Time.
