SARAH BURTON SAYS THAT TIME AND PRIVACY ARE OUR LAST LUXURIES.
As social media expands, going to places in our personal lives, our work and practically every facet of our lives, it has become almost invasive; some will say impossible to stay away from - and we totally get it. For creatives that are just starting, or at any point in their career actually, social media is the de facto portfolio holder, where they can show the work and build a brand around it, while spreading the word too, unlike a static website.
However, as Sarah Burton implies in her recent quote alongside her first men’s presentation during Paris men’s fashion week for Givenchy, which came about 22 months after she joined the house, and 31 months after the last menswear collection presented by Matthew Williams back in January 2024 - the proof was in the numbers.
That time between her appointment and the first collection was a luxury that not many designers get to experience, let alone the privacy, which she also embodies as she emphasizes that “I’m really not good at talking about something that I can’t connect with.” which also connects to how moving slowly and carefully, while working with real people and with no hurry will lead to great, deep results, and in this case, they all contributed to a beautiful collection that leaves spectators longing for the next one. Real connection over promotional work will always win.
